DEEP WATER SHARKS

The six-gilled shark (Hexanchus griseus) has (surprise!) six gill slits unlike most sharks that only have five. During the day, they spend most of their time deep down in the water. At night they will often migrate closer to the surface in order to feed. This is the time in which most divers encounter the six-gilled shark. Little is known about the social behavior and reproductive behavior of this species. Join us on a night dive next month to look for these mysterious fish.

You can see why it is often called a Bluntnose Shark.

HAVE YOU HEARD OF SEAFOOD WATCH?

Happy February from Puget Sound Dive Charters!

Thanks for the helpful feedback regarding last month’s newsletter. We appreciate any comments and/or suggestions you have for upcoming months!

INVERTEBRATES USING TOOLS?

Turns out primates (and birds, elephants, mustelids, and cetaceans) aren’t the only tool users in the animal kingdom. It was recently reported that a species of octopus in Indonesia, the veined octopus, Amphioctopus marginatus, uses coconut shells as shelter and armor. For more information and a great video, check out this Scientific American website: http://www.scientificamerican.com/blog/post.cfm?id=a-tool-wielding-octopus-this-invert-2009-12-14 The veined octopus carrying a coconut shell.

Perhaps our own Northwest octopus, the Giant Pacific Octopus, Enteroctopus defleini, is a tool user. The discovery may just waiting beneath the waves for a diver like to you find.

NEW SUNKEN VESSEL

Another mystery lies below the waves as of early January. A vessel ranging from 32 to 38 feet sunk and then a salvage was attempted by a private salvage company. While on tow to Seattle, the tow line tangled in the propellers of the 60 foot plus salvage vessel. The salvage crew cut the tow line and the salvaged vessel sunk near Eagle Harbor. Attempts to locate the vessel using sonar were unsuccessful. The sunken vessel could be in the area of Blakely Rock, Restoration Point, or Wing Point. Maybe on one of our dives you will be the first to find it!
